It is set in the backdrop of the the largest lake in the state  Vembanad Lake, famous for its backwater tourism. Kumarakom is situated 13 Kms away from Kottayam City. The village  offers the experience of wide variety of flora, exotic sightseeing, mangrove forests, paddy fields, coconut trees boating and fishing . Kumarakom  is sprawled over an area of 51.67 sq. km, which is inclusive of 24.13 sq. km of the lake and  paddy fields spread over an area of 15.75 sq. km. The village has a moderate climate throughout the year with the rainfall of 1100mm and with 27.3 °C of temprature. Kumarakom Village is 13 Km away from Kottayam which is nearest Railway Station and 94 Km away from Cochin International Airport. Some of the best places to visit in Kumarakon are Aymanam, Kudamaloor, Pallikkoodam, Kallara, Nattakom, Panachikkadu Rese  rvoirs.

Kumarakom has a bird sanctuary extends over 14 acres, the  bird sanctuary at Kumarakom is known for species of migratory birds, it is a home to flora and fauna. The Vembanad Lake, at Kerala is habitat of marine and species of freshwater fish.
   
Kumarakom boat race is well known across the world, it has a wide variety of houseboats to experience world for houseboat. Special boats like Odi-Vallam, Kochu-odi Vallam,  Churulan Vallam,Iruttukutthi Vallam,  and Chundan,  take part in the the boat races at Nehru Trophy Boat Race
